Sanskrit Sangha

Sanskrit Sangha

Day: Mondays, every other week
Time: 7-8:30 PM EDT
Next dates: March 7, 21, 2022
Facilitator: Glenn Wallis

The Sanskrit Sangha is dedicated to learning how to read the ancient Indian language of Buddhism, Hinduism, the Vedas, Yoga, the Upaniṣads, and much more. We are reading the original script, called devanāgarī, You may also want to learn how to write in the script. We use the text book Yogāvatāraam: The Translation of Yoga. (It costs $45 at the publisher’s website, but is available for $29 at Amazon, and even less for used copies.) Our sangha (group), like the book, combines academic and traditional methods of learning Sanskrit. Our approach is serious, yet relaxed and fun.

Facilitator: Glenn Wallis holds a PhD in Sanskrit (with an emphasis on Buddhist studies) from Harvard University’s Department of Sanskrit and Indian Studies (now called the Department of South Asian Studies). Wallis began his philological training at the renowned Institut für Indologie und Buddhismuskunde at Göttingen University in Germany, concentrating on Sanskrit, Pali, and Tibetan Buddhist literature. Among his publications, Buddhavacana: A Pali Reader (Parayatti, 2010), Mediating the Power of Buddhas:  Ritual in the Mañjuśrīmūlakalpa (SUNY Press, 2002); The Dhammapada: Verses on the Way (Random House Modern Library, 2007), and Basic Teachings of the Buddha (Random House Modern Library, 2010) contain substantial translations from those languages.
