Joe Mungo Reed’s ambitious and timely new novel, Hammer, transports its reader into the world of Russian oligarch Oleg Goralev, for whom geopolitics is a chess game and high art is a commodity. The novel’s been released amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the global response to which has brought the figure of the Russian oligarch further into the spotlight, with renewed interest in state-plundered fortunes and elite corruption.
Can the novelist aspire to speak directly to the moment? What does capitalist excess do to art’s political vitality? How does the novelist enliven made-up events with the definitive tensions of contemporary life?
Join us as we explore these questions through the lens of Reed’s new book. This seminar should be valuable for readers, writers, and thinkers of all kinds.
Joe Mungo Reed was born in London and raised in Gloucestershire, England. He has a degree in philosophy and politics from the University of Edinburgh, an MFA in creative writing from Syracuse University, and a PhD in creative writing from the University of Manchester. He is the author of the novel, We Begin Our Ascent, and his short stories have appeared in VQR, the London Evening Standard, and Corriere della Sera. He is currently living near London, UK.
